About me

I’ve always loved words. I love how, when used skillfully and thoughtfully, they have the power to change the world.

Once upon a time, I was going to be a veterinarian. I wrote an essay for my application to Michigan State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine about my sister Katie, barely out of high school, delivering a foal under the kind of conditions that would make a sane person never want to be a vet. At my interview, one of the committee members said, “Why do you want to be a vet? You should be a writer.”

It took me nearly two years and deep dive into the art of dissection before her words roused me from my formaldehyde stupor and changed my world.

For more than two decades, I have worked in communications—first as a journalist and then as a strategic communications director—with the goal of bringing voice to bright ideas. My work focuses on the do-gooders: nonprofits, government agencies, and individuals with a vision of the future as a just, balanced, and compassionate place.
